A Small Space with Big Impact
Nestled inside the Grand Island Public Library, the Art Alcove is an engaging, ever-changing alcove where creativity and community intersect. This modest gallery may be tucked away from the main shelves, but it shares the same energy and curiosity that define the library’s mission: to inform, inspire, and connect people through shared stories and experiences. The alcove isn’t just a display area; it’s a program, a collaboration space, and a testament to Grand Island’s vibrant local arts scene and history.
From the moment you step into the alcove, you’re greeted by a monthly rotating lineup of works that spans media, style, and subject matter. The diversity of media—mixed media, photography, fiber art, and small-scale sculpture—reflects a community that values experimentation as much as craft. My personal favorite are the quilt exhibits. I come from a long line of quilters and collectors.
What makes the Art Alcove particularly special is its collaborative spirit. Library staff partner with local individual artists and arts organizations to curate shows that reflect the seasons, themes of current city projects, or issues that matter to the community. This collaboration also extends to occasional special workshops within the library.
Accessibility sits at the heart of the alcove’s philosophy. Each exhibit is labeled with the artist’s name, any statements and materials lists. The intention is to share the creative process and make art approachable for all ages and backgrounds. For families with young children, it gives them exposure to a gallery and its etiquette in a familiar setting. For lifelong learners and seasoned art lovers, the alcove offers a regular space to appreciate diversified displays which can be enjoyed during their regular trips to the library.
Beyond showcasing local talent and traveling exhibits, the Art Alcove reinforces Grand Island Public Library’s broader commitment to accessibility and education. The space demonstrates how libraries can function as cultural hubs, not just repositories of books. Dedicated staff members serve as curators who manage the rotation schedule, coordinate loans, and ensure the display fixtures protect delicate works while remaining easy to view. When a show ends, the next phase—whether a solo artist or a group exhibition, each exhibit begins with a fresh invitation to visit again.

There are so many ways to be creative, and the community appreciates and enjoys seeing everyone’s unique talents.”
